Campervan Insurance Coverage

If you are looking to insure a camper van you have to look at the RV part of the insurers’ catalog or website since a camper van is known as a class B RV. Camper van insurance coverage is no different from car insurance, except for the fact that it has a few more insurance options for you to choose from.

Here is an overview of the insurance options that you are going to have to look at when insuring your campervan…

Liability coverage- This insurance is required wherever you live, except for the states of New Hampshire and Wisconsin. It does not pay you, but those around you if you are responsible for damage in an at-fault accident.

Liability insurance is divided into two parts, bodily injury liability and property damage liability. Property damage coverage pays for damage to other cars and things such as fences, and bodily injury pays medical bills.

Collision coverage- This pays for the repair costs of the camper van involved in an accident whether you are the guilty party or not. It is almost always required if you finance the van because the van isn’t really yours until you pay it all off.

Guaranteed Auto Protection- Lets say that your van is stolen and you will not get it back. The insurance provider pays you $10,000 for the loss but you still owe $15,000 in financing payments to the lender. GAP will pay for that difference.

Personal Injury Protection- Similar to health insurance coverage.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist- Covers you if the guilty party in an accident has little liability coverage to pay you.

Here are some insurance options that are commonly given out specifically to camper vans or RVs…

Personal belongings insurance- Your camper van is very much like your own home, with your personal belongings in it. Make sure that they are insured by your homeowners insurance.

Total Replacement Insurance- If your van is completely destroyed, this insurance coverage will pay for the cost to completely replace it by giving you a new recreational vehicle. If you have this coverage GAP is likely unnecessary.

Emergency Expense RV Coverage- This would pay for hotel and transportation costs if your campervan needs some time in the repair shop.

Vacation Liability Insurance Coverage- This coverage pays for damages for which you are liable for at a vacation site.
